Countryside Tours

Our All Day Constable and Suffolk tour starts with a pick up from your central London hotel. We then proceed to Flatford Mill.

Flatford Mill is on the River Stour on the Suffolk-Essex border. It is recognisable, since it features in paintings by John Constable. We will also allow time to have a quick break for tea/coffee. We will then proceed to Lavenham.

Lavenham is a beautiful village set in rural Suffolk and is particularly renowned for its 15th century church. The village which dates back to the Norman Conquest of England is steeped in history. Many of the timber framed building seen today in Lavenham were constructed during the 17th century and are now maintained by The National Trust. We will walk through this lovely village with its half-timbered medieval cottages. Lavenham itself was also home to the American Air Force during World War II. The US Army Air Force 487th Bombardment Group who flew 185 missions between March 1944 and August 1945 was based here. The land which housed the air base has since been returned to farm land.

We will also stop for lunch in one of the oak beamed inns, some with inglenook fireplaces and cosy interiors. Many of these inns also date back to medieval times. We will also have time to visit the Crooked House Gallery. This is just a very small taster of the history connected with Lavenham and on the tour, you will learn much much more!

There is a lot to see and take in, and, after time for some photographs, we will then proceed on our way to Finchingfield.

Finchingfield village has been described as ‘the most photographed village in England’ with its pond, complete with ducks, and village green it is a classic English village. It is a truly beautiful village dating back to the 1600s.Finchingfields Windmill dates back to the 1750’s but stands on the site of earlier mills dating back to medieval times. After falling into disuse the mill has now been well restored . It is open to the public. The Church (St. John the Baptist,) is an ancient structure , and has a stone tower, which contains eight bells, and was formerly surmounted by a lofty spire, which was blown down in 1702. The church dates back to Norman times. For hundreds of years the Guildhall was the centre of village life. This Grade I building has immense historical significance.

We will spend time in Finchingfield and can take afternoon tea here. We will then commence our journey back to London. We will take you through other beautiful villages and countryside in Essex.
